Best WordPress Blog Theme?

by ZooMeister on January 24, 2010

I received a comment today from a fellow who asked a great question, so I thought I’d answer him here rather than bury my response under the comments area.  DishTV Guy asked:

“… I already have a website and I was thinking about adding a blog because I like what you do with yours. I notice that your website looks like a regular website but it is a blog. What’s the big difference between a blog and a regular site? Which is better? I’m confused.”

An interesting question and one that is hotly debated in the webmaster world.  Blogs used to be website additions or stand-alone apps on sites like WordPress and Blogger.  Blogging platforms such as these began as a type of journal, or threaded conversation, but in recent years they have morphed into a powerful content management systems (CMS), especially WordPress and others like Joomla.  The other good news is that these programs are free.

I prefer WordPress because there are thousands of “Themes” available and it is capable of doing just about anything a traditional website is used for.  Better still, most of the behind the scene action is fully automated.  In addition, if you choose the right theme, there are huge benefits in automated SEO functions, image rotation and an endless list of widgets and plug-ins to enrich your visitor’s experience.

WordPress is the platform (the software that makes things work), but the theme you choose delivers the ‘look & feel’ and permits the addition of high-end widgets and plug-ins.  I have launched scores of blogs for clients and myself and tried virtually every professional theme available.  The one I use and highly recommend is a premium theme called “Thesis“.  Watch a video about how Thesis can be customized and learn more about it’s unique features at the Thesis website by DIYthemes.

Thesis is a premium theme, which means it costs a little money, but the difference between it and free themes is the power under the hood.  If you are launching a website or want to add a blog to your existing website, I would encourage you to consider WordPress and install the Thesis theme.  Another huge benefit of choosing this option is that you don’t have to be a web programmer to use it.  No web authoring software is required.  In short, if you can use a program like Microsoft Word, you can build a compelling high-end website.  This AdzZoo Review website is the perfect example of a WordPress blog using the Thesis theme.
