Google’s Super Bowl Ad… and YOU

Colts fans witnessed a disappointing end to their football season last Sunday, but if you were a Saint’s fan you enjoyed a BIG win.

Regardless of which team you were hoping would win, the Super Bowl of 2010 was a great football game.  For those of us involved with the online marketing world, the BIG news witnessed by tens of millions of viewers during the most watched show in television history… was a commercial.

Google’s Super Bowl Commercial

Think about this… one of the largest, most profitable companies in the world paid $3 million for a commercial that included no well-known personalities, no eye candy, no voice overs and no special effects.  Google  simply showed that anything from buying an airline ticket to finding love is available on the Internet.

Can you imagine what would have happened if Google had used your company as their example in that ad. Your webserver would have imploded within minutes and your phone lines jammed for days. Now THAT is the kind of problem to have…

Obviously, Google didn’t use YOUR company in their ad, but they did demonstrate how people search for – and find what they want online.   They also showed the power of “Local Search” (geo-targeting) as they looked for a “chocolate shop” and a “church” in Paris, France.

The other Super Bowl commercials were pitching products or services or branding companies, but this ad showed website owners how important it is to rank well in Google.  If you noticed, the guy driving the mouse in this commercial did not click through dozens of pages of search results, he chose links on page ONE of the results.
