Should you advertise online?

Only if you want to remain in business!

I had an interesting email from a businessman in Orlando, FL who took the time to write to me and tell me that he didn’t feel comfortable advertising online.  He went on to say that he believed that his “old advertising methods” were working for him.

The fact that he wrote to me speaks volumes.  Mostly, it tells me that he is questioning his belief that the status quo is delivering the best value for his business and that he wants to feel more comfortable trying something that he is unfamiliar with.

I replied to his email and explained that it really doesn’t matter how he used to advertise his business, or whether or not he liked online marketing.  The trends of the American consumer are what is important and his business needed to adapt or get left behind.  The facts speak for themselves…

  • 80 percent of the total adult population of the U.S. (184 million) are on the Internet.
  • The average Internet user is online 13 hours per week.
  • Americans spend 30% of their leisure time online.

The consumer is now in charge.  If we want to reach them, we must advertise where they hang out… and our customers hang out online! Local search marketing (geo-targeting) is the most cost-effective means of reaching local buyers.
