One of the coolest features of the Internet backbone is its ability to bypass problems and reroute data in the event of a failure of one of its components. As an example, if a major hub fails for any reason, data is routed around that particular choke point and delivered via a different path.
Unfortunately, our homes and businesses don’t share such advanced technology when we’re talking about the electricity grid. When the power fails… we’re dead in the water. There is no public back-up network or way to reroute electricity.
Such was the case last week when we experienced a “Brown-Out” locally and then a complete loss of power for 4-5 hours. Doing without electricity can be a minor inconvenience, but as I experienced my first “brown-out”, I learned that partial power is worse than no power. Never having experienced such a phenomenon, I was not aware that it could be so damaging to appliances.
When the lights came back on, I discovered that my UPS battery back-ups were fried and the power supply in my computer was also history. After four days without a computer, and many hours catching up on email and stalled projects, I am almost back to ‘normal’.
The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated!
I must admit that it was nice to hear from so many people asking if I was still able to fog a mirror as it had been so long since I last posted on this blog. Nice to know people are following my posts and concerned when there is a lapse in new articles.
